草葺屋根とその技術の保存ため、土壁技術保存のための活動

　佐賀県、特に鹿島市、嬉野市、多久市には草葺屋根の民家が多数のこっています。 その多くがヨシ葺きです。地産地消の素材で作られるヨシ葺き屋根は、外観の美しさだけではなく、夏は涼しく過ごせ、 古くなったヨシは肥料としてリサイクルが可能。温暖化が進む昨今、 機能性と経済性を持ち合わせたエコロジー建築ともいえますが、古民家の減少、ヨシ葺き職人の後継者不足、 建築基準法の制約などヨシ葺き屋根を取り巻く状況は年々厳しくなっています。

　そこで、私たちは佐賀県に働きかけて実績あるヨシ葺き棟梁を県指定のマイスターに任命していただく事にしました。 その後、棟梁たちは学校で体験学習を行うなど技術を広める活動をされています。 さらには、各地で行われるヨシ葺き情報を公開し、一般の方が実際に体験できる機会を設けたり、 ヨシ葺き民家を見学することでことでヨシ葺き屋根の良さを知ってもらったり、 ヨシ葺き民家の住民のみなさんの相談窓口になったり、そんな活動をしています。

We engage in conserving thatched roofs and mud wall techniques

Hand-on learning for Yoshi thatching (observation is welcome)

In Saga prefecture, particularly in Kashima city, Ureshino city and Taku city, there are still a lot of thatched roof (yoshi) houses. Most of them are made of reed (Yoshi) and they are local plant. Yoshi roof has not only good appearance but also enable us to spend a hot and humid summer in Japan comfortably. Furthermore, old yoshi are recycled as compost, so yoshi roof is a kind of environmental friendly with its functional and economic efficiency against global warming. Yet, the condition surrounding Yoshi roof is getting severer year by year because of reducing komika, lacking of skillful successors and restricting by the building standard Act in Japan.

I encouraged the government of Saga prefecture to certify a skillful yoshi thatching craftsman as a designated ‘Master’ and engaging in spread out their techniques to others such as hand-on learning at schools. Additionally, we transmit information to the public to experience and understand the good of yoshi thatching and give advices to people living in yoshi-roof houses.
